When to Use a Child Bike Trailer

Child bike trailers are a safe way to take your little one with you when you go out riding. They are small trailers that connect to the back of your bike’s rear axle. They are most often times enclosed to protect your child from the elements as well as provide extra security in case of an accident.

According to Consumer Reports, child bike trailers should not be used before your child is a year old. This is not a rule specific to trailers, but rather a general bicycle rule. You should not take your child on any sort of bicycle before they are a year old.

The reason for this is that the bumping can cause damage to your child’s still developing brain. Even if you provide a helmet, it is still not safe for your child before they are a year old. Even then, they should only ride in bicycle trailers if they are able to hold their own head up, which should be no problem by the time they are a year old.

Bicycle trailers have different weight restrictions, so the age limit would depend on your child’s size. In general, bike trailers can be used up until your child is about 6 years old.

Though, most bikes have a weight limit of up to 125 pounds. It is best not to test the limits of the weight as the heavier your child is, the less control and balance the bike and trailer will have. This is why 6 remains the suggested upper age for bike trailer use.

Child Bike Seats

A second option available for taking your child with you when riding your bike is the child bike seat. The main advantage of the bike seats over the trailer is that they are smaller.

They can fit right on the back or front of your bicycle. Trailers, on the other hand, are bulkier, and wider. They reduce your maneuverability. Child bike seats allow for much of the same movement as bicycling without your child.

Despite this positive, there are many negatives that some consider outweighing the positives of the bike seat, according to Consumer Reports. The main issues are all to do with the safety issues of a child bike seat.

The main safety issue is the exposure of the child seat. If you were to get in an accident, there is nothing between your child and the road. The trailer, on the other hand, tends to have some sort of roll cage to provide better coverage in the case of an accident.

A secondary safety issue would be the distance your child would fall if your bike were to tip over. A bike seat would put your child about 3 feet in the air.

Trailers, on the other hand, have special safety features in the hitch that will keep it upright if your bike were to fall. It also rides close to the ground so if the trailer were to tip, there is less of a distance between your child and the ground.

A third risk issue is the decrease of balance of a bike seat. The seat makes bikes more unstable than a trailer would. The seat has also been known to affect the breaking speed. It also makes simple acts such as mounting and remounting a longer trial due to having to keep your child balanced in the process.

While child bike seats have their place, they are not the highest recommendation for taking your child with you when cycling. Trailers are the safer route, and some say easier route to take of the two options.

Benefits of Riding a Bike

Whether you are a bike-lover or a mom just trying to fit in a little exercise between your daily duties, cycling is a healthy form of exercise that can fit in nearly everyone’s schedules. This is a huge factor since now that you have an extra little person to look after, getting in that half an hour to an hour and a half exercise each day becomes a challenge.

According to Better Health, cycling is a perfect exercise for a busy schedule. Let’s face it, we all need to exercise more. But, most of us just don’t have the time or energy like we used to. As we age, we start to also have aches and pain that make some of those extreme work out routines just a little much. Cycling is a great solution since it is an exercise for nearly everyone.

Cycling has many health benefits. It targets nearly every part of your body. It is cardio for your heart to prevent strokes. It raises your mood which helps fight depression. It also fights against diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. Cycling is an easy low impact sport. We aren’t as young as we used to be. Those jumps and punches that some popular exercise routines consist of aren’t always the best idea.

Cycling is not hard on your joints and muscles, so you can do it as you age. It is also an easier sport to pick up, so you don’t have to worry about learning new skills. It can also be customized to your specific skill level. You can choose if you want to race up a mountain like in the Tour de France, or you just want to peddle around the park.

Cycling can be done with your kids. This is a huge benefit of this exercise! You don’t need to worry about finding a place to keep your child occupied during your aerobics, or finding a babysitter when you go out for a jog.

You can take your child with you in the trailer, and once they are old enough they can even ride alongside you with their own bikes. This is a great way to get them out in the fresh air along with you as well as teach them good exercising habits early on. Cycling can fit into anyone’s schedule. That’s one of the main reasons parents give up on exercise when they have kids, they just don’t have the time.

When you think of cycling, don’t think you have to ride a route like when you go jogging. Cycling can be used as a way to do your daily errands. Instead of driving to the doctor, why not ride your bike to the doctor? Why drive to the bank when you can cycle to the bank and get your exercise in?

Child Bike Trailer Safety

While child bike trailers are a great way to get out and about with your little one, there are still some safety cautions to keep in mind. The first and foremost is that you and your child should always wear a helmet.

According to Helmets.org, there is no federal law requiring you to wear a helmet when riding your bike. That being said, certain states have begun passing their own laws and regulations when it comes to helmets.

While many states still don’t require adults to wear helmets, most states do require anyone under 18 (and in some cases 16) to wear a helmet. If your child is too small to find a helmet that fits, then you will just need to wait until they are bigger. Safety is more important than convenience.

Be sure the helmet you choose has met the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. Outside of the CPSC, there are multiple other organizations that help test helmets for their safety.

One of the biggest names in helmet safety is Snell. They are very similar to the CPSC in the way they test all helmets for all sports before providing their safety seal.

There are also the ASTM who provides a high standard. They are not used as much since the CPSC has taken over. Also be sure the helmet is fitted properly by someone who knows how to fit a helmet.

When choosing a bike trailer, there aren’t any universal standards for trailers to meet. This makes it very important for you to look into what different trailer brands have set up as their own standards of testing to ensure the trailer truly is the safest option available.

Most sellers will be very open about their safety testing as they are proud of the certifications. If you cannot find any indication of testing, assume it wasn’t tested. One sticker to look for is the ASTM International sticker. It means that the company did meet that organization’s safety standard. While the ASTM seal is not required, it is highly recommended.

Be sure that a full-grown adult is the only one riding the bike when the trailer is attached. There are still many risks when riding with a trailer such as balance and stopping time. A younger person may not be as stable and safety conscious when riding as an adult would be.

According to Healthy Children, your trailer should have a safety harness. Anytime your child is in a piece of equipment that will be moving, a harness should be used. Trailers are no exception. The walls and roof can only protect them so much. A proper harness, preferably a five-point harness, is the safest way to protect your child when cycling.

When you ride, try to avoid cars or roads. Try to use back roads, and park paths for the safest route. Keep in mind that bike trailers are low to the ground.

As a result, cars are not always able to see them. If you do end up riding near a road where cars drive, be sure to put a tall reflector such as a reflector flag on the bike trailer that can be seen over a drivers dashboard to alert them of the presence of the trailer.

When choosing a trailer, try to find trailers with a ball and socket joint. According to Baby Center, this is the safest joint to keep a bike tipping the trailer over if it happens to fall down.

When you ride your bike, dirt will be flung from your tires back towards your child in the trailer. Of course, if you put down the front flap of the trailer (if a front flat is available) your child can be protected from dirt and stones.

But, this isn’t always enjoyable for your little one. You can solve this issue easily by adding a back fender over your bike tire to prevent dirt from flying up.

Types of Child Bike Trailers

There are two main types of child bike trailers. There are pedal trailers and regular trailers.

Pedal Trailers

Pedal trailers are mainly for older children who are able to pedal for themselves. They are a fun way to let your child feel more involved with the bike ride and keep them entertained. While the involvement factor is great, unfortunately, a downside is that they do not offer as much protection as the regular trailers. Also, younger children can only be put in the regular trailers.

Regular Trailers

Among regular trailers, the main difference is in size. Most trailers come in either the single or double size. Double size is great for multiple children or for one child and storage space. The downside with the double trailers is that they are much wider than the single trailers.

Multi-Use Trailers

Another type of trailer available is the multi-use trailers. These can be used for more than just a bike trailer. They usually double as a jogger stroller as well as a regular bike trailer. This is a great way to save money and get a double use out of the trailer.

While the stroller/bike trailer conversion is common, some higher end trailers will add a couple other features. They commonly have adjustments in order to convert your trailer to either a regular stroller, or a jogger. They can also have a ski attachment that makes going over ice or snow easier and more stable than using regular tires.

Features of Child Bike Trailers

There are a couple different features that you should consider before deciding on a bike trailer.

Weight Limit

The main feature would be the weight limit. You need to decide how long you plan on using your bike trailer before moving to the next step. Be sure to choose a bike trailer that will hold your child that full length of time in order to save you the headache of scrambling for a transitional trailer before moving to a pedal trailer or whatever your next step is.

Connection to a Bike Trailer

The next feature to look at is how the trailer connects to your bike. Generally speaking, bike trailers tend to be pretty universal in their connections. Unless you have a specialty trailer or bike, the trailer will most likely fit. That being said, bike trailers are quite the investment so you probably don’t want to purchase a trailer on “should.” Rather, double check the connection.

Folding Feature

Trailers are pretty large items, so you may not want them sitting around your garage depending on your space. Some trailers offer the option to fold it in order to store it easier or to be able to throw it in the car when you are traveling.

Safety Features

Safety should always be your number one concern for your child. All trailers offer different types of safety features that they’ve chosen to add to their trailer. One of these are bumpers. They may make the trailer quite a bit wider so they can become more of a hassle than benefit, but depending on where you plan to ride, they may be worth a consideration.

The outside safety features are just as important as the inside safety features. Check where your child sits. Be sure there is a safe and comfortable harness for your child. Also look at how padded the seats are.

There will be quite a bit of bumping around during the ride, so you don’t want minimalistic seats that will cause bruising during your ride. Also look at what attachment options are available for added support for younger children.

Along with the seats, keep in mind cleaning. The trailer will last longer if you are able to remove the seat covers or seats to be thoroughly cleaned every now and then. Otherwise, look to see how accessible the trailer is for your children getting in and out, and for you to keep it clean.

Window, Vents, and Rain Covers

Natural elements can sometimes be a bigger enemy than the dangers on the road. Between the burning sun or chilling rain, your child should always be protected. Look for the element protection features of trailers such as waterproofing, roll down windows, and vents to prevent overheating.

Do not let the trailer’s protection replace other protective measures you would otherwise use on your child. Some of these would be providing a hat, sunglasses, and applying sunscreen. Also, it is always best to give your child the proper coat and not fully depend on the trailer being leak proof during a heavy rain.

Tires

One other feature to look at when considering a trailer is the type of tires. Trailers will either have air tires or plastic tires. Air tires tend to give the smoothest ride for your child. Some trailers may have rubber tires, they work better than plastic, but aren’t quite as smooth over rocks and pebbles as air tires. Larger tires will also help ease up the bumps when riding with a child bike trailer.

Thule Chariot Cross Multi-sport Trailer 2

Thule Chariot Cross Multi-sport Trailer 2

Thule Chariot Cross Multi-Sport Trailer

The Thule Chariot Cross Multi-sport Trailer 2 is a top of the line bike trailer that rivals the Burley D’Lite trailer when it comes to comfort and safety.

The investment you make in this high-end trailer will not just give you a bike trailer, but also a jogger, stroller, and a skier. This makes this stroller also one of the most versatile trailers available.

This trailer is designed for the utmost comfort for your little one. Some reviewers have even rated the Thule Chariot higher than Burley when it came to comfort.

Some of the features that make this trailer so comfortable are the unique design of the seats. The seats have extra padding for your little ones to be nestled in safely, as well as a 5-point harness to keep them securely fastened.

Each seat can be reclined individually to make your children even more comfortable during the ride. An adjustable leaf suspension helps to ease those little bumps along the way, as well as the 20 inch wheels.

This trailer also protects your little ones from the elements. A fully adjustable sunshade keeps the sun off your little ones. It will also keep the rain out.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a ventilation system so it can get a little stuffy if the trailer is kept sealed for too long. The rest of the trailer is built strong, with all the safety standards of the ASTM, including a roll cage.

This trailer is one of the easiest trailers to store away. With a few quick release buttons, you can have your entire trailer collapsed in a small bundle for storage. To keep your trailer extra clean, the seats can be removed between uses.

A large front tire can be purchased separately to be added in order to convert the trailer into a jogging stroller. Sepnine Baby Bicycle Trailer for One Child

Sepnine Baby Bicycle Trailer for One ChildSepnine Baby Bicycle Trailer for One Child

The Sepnine Baby Bicycle Trailer for One Child is a simple, one-child trailer option for a lower price. There is no conversion or extra bells and whistles with this bike trailer, but it serves its purpose while remaining small and lightweight. The trailer comes with a safety flag and universal hitch.

The Sepnine trailer is definitely a smaller trailer measuring just 24” x 16” x 22” all around. The trailer can only hold one child, with a maximum weight capacity of only 50 pounds.

In addition to the child, there are small storage areas for a couple items you may want to bring along with you. Its seats are slightly padded, and have a 5-point harness for your child’s ultimate protection. The entire trailer sits on two 16 inch wheels.

The trailer is made on a steel frame for extra security. It can attach to most bikes through a universal coupler which attaches to the back wheel, as long as the bike measures between 20-28” tall. The entire trailer can be condensed for storage when you are not using it.

Pros:

  • This trailer is more affordable.

  • The trailer folds very flat for storage.

This is a nice little trailer that does its job. It is not the top of the line by far, and there are other trailers within a similar price range that are better quality. The main concern with this trailer is the lack of safety seals, meaning that it has not been tested by any trusted organization.

Hamax Outback Multi-Sport Child Bike Trailer

Hamax Outback Multi-Sport Child Bike TrailerHamax Outback Multi-Sport Child Bike Trailer

The Hamax Outback Multi-Sport Child Bike Trailer is a high end bike trailer from one of the leaders in European child carriers for over 30 years.

Hamax recently began selling their products in the USA under the name of Hamax USA. All their products follow strict safety guidelines for both Scandinavia and the USA through their EN/ASTM certification. They even won the Red Dot award in 2016 for their design, ease of use, comfort, and safety.

One of the unique features of the Hamax Outback trailer is its sleek design. It is made in order to provide more maneuverability as well as air flow so that you can ride easier and safer without feeling the weight of the trailer as much.

This trailer is available in both as one child and a two child option. Both options have the same features. Even with the sleek design, there is still plenty of room for storage.

The trailer can be converted for multiple uses. The main use is as a bike trailer. It can also be switched to be used as a regular stroller or as a jogger.

The jogger conversion kit is sold separately. The stroller option has all the necessary safety features such as a parking brake. All conversions are very quick and simple. Most conversion options can be done through quick release buttons. When you are not using the trailer, it can be easily collapsed for storage.

Your children will be very comfortable in the large cockpit with their padded seats which can be reclined. Each seat has a 5-point harness for further protection.

An adjustable shock suspension helps keep the ride smooth. Your child is also protected from the elements with the UV-protected windows and removable sunroof. The entire trailer is water resistant, and has ventilation to keep airflow even when sealed.

The three protection options for the trailer are a sunshade, bug screen, or a rain cover in order to protect your child from all weather.

PROS & CONS

Pros:

  • This trailer is very comfortable for your little one.
  • The trailer passes the safety inspections of the ASTM.
  • The unique sleek design helps make this trailer a little easier to pull.
  • Your child is protected from all the elements.

Cons:

  • The price is on the higher end of bike trailers.
  • There are not as many conversion options considering the price.
  • The outside covers do not always stay out of the way very easily.

While Hamax is well-known in Europe, not everyone in the West is as familiar with them as a company as they are with other brands like Thule or Burley.

That being said, Hamax has still began making their mark in the bike trailer world. The one main downsides of the Hamax trailer versus its competitors, Burley and Thule, is how few options the Hamax trailer has outside of being a bike trailer.

Most people, if they are going to invest in a higher end trailer, would also like the versatility to get as much use out of it as possible in different scenarios.

Allen Sports has a line of bike trailers available. The different trailers vary in what they are capable of doing. There is the 1 child trailer, 1 child trailer and jogger,  and the 1 child trailer and stroller.

Then there are all those options in the 2 child version as well. This specific trailer is just a two-child trailer option. This is the simplest and lightest weight trailer. There are no conversions with this trailer, which makes it cheaper than other trailers.

Some of the features that this trailer does have are a storage compartment and the capability to be folded in order to store it more easily.

The entire trailer can hold up to 100 pounds. There is no extra padding for the seats, and the seats only have a 3-point harness. There is a ventilation system to help with airflow. A steel frame helps keep the trailer safer and sturdier.

PROS & CONS

Pros:

  • This is one of the least expensive trailer options.
  • The trailer is lighter in weight.
  • There is great ventilation.

Cons:

  • There are no other conversion options with the trailer.

Pacific Cycle InStep Sync Single Bicycle Trailer

Pacific Cycle InStep Sync Single Bicycle Trailer

Pacific Cycle InStep Sync Single Bicycle TrailerThe Pacific Cycle InStep Sync Single Bicycle Trailer is the basic trailer design by In Step. In Step is a trusted name in family fitness gear. The entire trailer is incredibly small, weighing just 40 pounds. It holds one child in the back cockpit.

This InStep trailer is designed for simplicity. There aren’t any fancy bells and whistled to weigh it down. The seat inside is also minimalistic with very little padding on the seat or the harness. The trailer can hold up to 40 pounds.

The InStep single trailer only comes with the option of being a bike trailer, though the stroller attachments can be purchased separately.

While this may be inconvenient for some, it does help to cut down on the weight limit if your main goal is to find a lightweight trailer.

The entire trailer sits on two 16 inch wheels. These are on the smaller end, which again may not be the best if you plan on going on longer trips. The entire trailer can fold up when you are ready to store it.

The trailer does have some protection from the elements. Their canopy has a 2-in-1 design. It can either be used as a bug screen or a weather screen depending on your specific needs. A safety flag comes with the trailer.

PROS & CONS

Pros:

  • This is a very lightweight trailer option.
  • This is a more affordable trailer option.
  • There is some protection from the elements.
  • The trailer is very easy to set up.

Cons:

  • The design is not made for longer, or bumpier trips due to the smaller tires and lesser padding.
  • It can only fit on bikes with a wheel size of 26 inches or smaller.
  • The tire should not be inflated to the recommended tire pressure or else a blow out could occur.
  • There are no seals for safety inspections.

In Step has one of the more reliable smaller trailer options. Unfortunately, it does lack in the area of quality. It is still one of the better lightweight options in addition to Burley’s Bee design trailer.

It is also from a brand that is trusted in fitness products. This is a great little trailer that is perfect for small trips around the town. It is however not the best choice if you plan to do longer treks.

The Pacific Cycle Schwinn Trailblazer Double Bicycle Trailer is a basic and affordable double bike trailer option. What makes this option great is how lightweight it is compared to other double bike trailers. Though, that is in part due to the fact that this is another minimalistic designed trailer.

The trailer can be switched between a regular bike trailer and a stroller option with a front swivel wheel. The back tires have a safety brake option for when you put it in park. When you are not using the trailer, it can be easily folded up with the quick-release wheel option.

Your two children have decent space inside the cockpit. Though, this trailer can only hold up to 80 pounds, with the distribution of 40 pounds per seat.

There is only a little bit of padding. The entire trailer is then covered with a 2-in-1 canopy. The canopy acts to both shield out the weather as well as keep out insects.

The trailer sits on two 20 inch wheels. A safety flag is included with the trailer to help cars see when you are riding near roads.

PROS & CONS

Pros:

  • This is a more affordable trailer option.
  • The trailer is more lightweight.
  • The trailer can be converted into a stroller.
  • A safety flag is included.

Cons:

  • The floorboard is not reinforced and tends to droop after a while.
  • The weight limit is only 80 pounds.
  • There isn’t much back room for a child’s helmet, causing their heads to be pushed forward.
  • The seats aren’t very comfortable.
  • There are no safety inspection seals showing that the trailer has passed any safety tests.
  • This trailer does not fit all types of bikes.

The Schwinn trailer is a more affordable option when it comes to double trailers. It also goes to show that you can have two kids in a trailer without breaking the bank.

The entire trailer is also more lightweight because of how minimalistic the design is. The trailer is also of lesser quality than some of the other brands, which should be expected considering the lower price. This just means that this trailer is best for shorter trips around town versus longer rides over rugged terrain.

The Winner

Child bike trailers are difficult to shop for as each person will have a different bike, the number of children, and terrain that they are shopping for.

The number one deciding factor is choosing a trailer that has a seal of safety on it. This really limits the number of trailers in the running.

If you are going to be making the investment, it is best to look for a more versatile option. That way, you can use it for more than just a bike trailer and save yourself money in the long run. You will also want one that will be comfortable for your child, and protect them from the elements.

Out of all the trailers reviewed, the one that best fulfills these needs is the Thule Chariot Cross Multi-Sport Trailer. While it is more expensive, the price reflects just what you are getting in the trailer.

It has all the best features of bike trailers along with a stamp of safety. Its versatility makes it great for either one or two kids. You can use it in the rain or sun.

It even can have ski attachments for the snow. It is no wonder the Thule bike trailer has been a favorite of many customers who are glad they spent a little more to invest in a piece of equipment they can use for all occasions and for many years.
